[sticky post] Welcome to Hinamizawa-When They Translate
Greetings!  This is the official community for the When They Translate, a group currently working on translating the Higurashi visual novels into English, starting with Watanagashi-hen and picking up where the previous group left off.  I help maintain this community and work as a beta-tester/editor for the group.  The patches provided here will be for the Japanese versions of the games, so you will need to have imported at least Himatsubushi-hen and Matsuriyabashi-hen in order to apply them.  A lot of us had already purchased the games before MangaGamer's releases, only for the original translation project to grind to a halt.  The "official" translation provided by MangaGamer had many problems, including switched sprites and music, poor translation, and the removal of all extras.  Rest assured these patches will not have these same issues and will be more accurate to the original works.  Also, please be aware that this is a small group, so the patches may take some time.  We will do our best to keep you updated.

NOTE:  I came up with the "When They Translate" name.: P

Oh, I just saw this entry. Where can I find Onikakushi's translation patch? Was that translation "consistent" with yours?

Thanks!
syberiawinxsyberiawinx on August 25th, 2012 07:20 pm (UTC)
I'll see about getting one uploaded. We used the twins' patch, with more credit than they deserve. I know some changes were made on my suggestion, like readding Rika's "desu".
HarlequinHarlequinEG on August 24th, 2013 09:52 am (UTC)
Hello, sorry for bringing this up but I really wanna know: so does Onikakushi-hen already have a fan translation that is superior to the MangaGamer translation? Since you're translating Watanagashi-hen right now yourself.

If so, where can one get it? Is it related to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTYXwWF_ad0 or not really?

Or wait... is it just that there's not point in having only the first arc translation, and that you're simply continuing on it by going for arc 2 and onwards?
syberiawinxsyberiawinx on August 24th, 2013 12:46 pm (UTC)
There is already a superior translation for the first arc. Originally, it was made by another group that later hurt a lot of people and broke promises, abandoning the project. That left a lot of us with copies of the games and no patch. We used that patch with our own, making some fixes they refused to.

It's not like that video, but I do believe we're working on something like that eventually.

I didn't understand your last question, however.

Anyway, we can upload the patch, if you want, but you need a Japanese copy of the game for it. You can also download the first game legally on the official Higurashi site.
HarlequinHarlequinEG on August 25th, 2013 08:48 am (UTC)
Hmm I see I see. Well, I haven't seen this patch anywhere else. I assume it's not the same one that exists on Higurashi Tweak (that one was made by some /jp/ anons I think)

So if you could upload it, then that would be great, thank you.

About downloading the game
Where precisely can I download the original japanese game? I don't understand japanese and I haven't found any english site where to download the game.

Re: About downloading the game
http://www.07th-expansion.net/hi_Main.htm

On the left side, there are a bunch of buttons. The second one should take you to a page with numbered download links. I've not tried these in a long time, but they should still be active.

Please keep in mind, if you are not in Japan, you cannot use links 1-6. Also, this contains the first arc only, but none of the extras that come along with that episode-you'll only get those if you buy the game.

tis dead or what?
You never know with new translating groups.

Re: tis dead or what?
The main girl working on it seems to be trying her hardest, and she messaged me. I passed on your concerns. I'm doing my best to quickly test and make suggestions or whatever on anything she sends me.

A few questions
I just read the first arc that you have translated and I truly think that this translation is the best version of the game. But that left me with a few questions.

1) How is the translating of second chapter going?

2) Are there going to be ps2-type patch for other arcs?

3) And are all arcs separately? Because for example MangaGamers release have multiple arcs in the same "game".

Keep up the good work!

Re: A few questions
1. Assuming you're referring to the second game, it's coming along nicely.

2. I do believe we're trying to do something for the PS2 and maybe even the DS arcs, but even if we did, that would be a long time from now.

3. The link I gave you is for the "demo", which is the full first arc/game, minus the extras that unlock upon beating it. If you want to play the rest of the series, you will need to import the games. There are three discs you should look into getting, probably at someplace like PlayAsia:

Himatsubushi-hen(Contains games 1-4)
Matsuribayashi-hen(Contains games 5-8)

We’ll also likely translate the bonus disc, which is called Higurashi Rei.

Thanks.^^ We're trying our best!

Recruitment
Hello, I'm just wondering how many are currently working on the patch. If you're short of people, I think I can help. I have worked on Onscript for while and I think I can help with the editing of the script.

I like your patch by the way. Thank you for your efforts... ))
It's good to see that the fanbase is still alive after almost a decade.

Re: Recruitment
I don't suppose you have an iPad or any skill patching IOS games? That would be the most helpful right now. Our other project is a Japanese iTunes game.

As for Higurashi, it's just the two of us. I can see, but after some recent events, we're hesitant to work with others.

Glad you like the patch.^^. You might want to check out our "When They Translate" Tumblr.

Re: Recruitment
unfortunately, I have only worked on Onscript and Bgi and have zero knowledge on IOS games. Is that your main priority at the moment? I was in a guise that you were only working on Higurashi.

From what I have read from your Tumblr page, I can understand why you're hesitant to work with anyone. With that said, are you or your partner still in contact with the French patcher from a while back? Maybe he'll need help on anything. I really want to see this project's completion since Umineko is getting a full port by Honyaku and UmiTweak, why not Higurashi too, right? ^^

syberiawinxsyberiawinx on January 11th, 2014 09:58 am (UTC)
Re: Recruitment
You'd be better off asking Maya about the French patcher.

We're working on both games, but Higurashi is farther along. It's been our main focus longer, and we're currently searching for someone to help with the other one.

How can I contact her then?

Same way you contacted me or by PMing her.

Re: Recruitment
It's ok. I went ahead and contacted him directly. Awaiting a reply at the moment.

Thanks for your replies and good luck on your projects! ^^

Is anyone still here?
This place has gone more than a year without an update, and I have some questions to ask you.

Have you finished Watangashi-hen yet? If not, how much longer until it's done?
Is the project on hiatus? Has it been abandoned?
Why no update for the last year?
ARE YOU STILL ALIVE?!?!?

Any type of reply would be appreciated. Even saying hello would mean you still know about this place.

Re: Is anyone still here?
Don't worry. We're still here! Sorry it's taking so long. The project is largely just us two, and I'm only a beta-tester/editor.
pizzaman123 on March 22nd, 2017 03:01 pm (UTC)
Re: Is anyone still here?
Thank goodness the project is still alive and well! That makes me happy!

Since I've got your attention, could you please update me on how far along you are with the project?

Is Watangashi-Hen finished? Have you moved on to the next arc? Or are you still working on it?

I don't expect a release date or an in-depth answer, I would just really like to know how far along you are.

Thanks!

Re: Is anyone still here?
We're still in Watanagashi-hen. I don't know exactly how far we are overall, but I CAN tell you we've cleared the festival.
